From juliepalmer56 at webster.edu Fri Jan 14 07:16:28 2022 From: juliepalmer56 at webster.edu (Julie Palmer) Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2022 14:16:28 +0000 Subject: [MOBTS-L] MOBTC 2022 Experiential Fire session submissions Message-ID: Dear MOBTS Friends, It's time to reignite yet another fantastic Experiential Fire session! After a Covid pause this past year, we are ready to see you all in person! This time, our united team of service-oriented fire builders will gather together at Cal Poly Pomona (June 8-11). For those who are familiar with the Experiential Fire session, you know what we're looking for - teaching innovations that are fun for students and educators alike, knowledge-generating, impactful, replicable, easily shared with others, low-cost, learning-oriented, and can be communicated in a "quick and dirty" format (i.e, in five minutes). Traditionally this is the largest session with outstanding attendance! If you would like to be part of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (this year's conference theme) with us as a presenter and share your teaching innovations, then we would love to have you! For those who are new to our energizing campfire, join us and read on below. Please note: your contributions need not be specific to the conference theme. What is experiential fire? This session is designed to offer a collection of engaging experiential exercises from a number of presenters in a "show us what you got" in five minutes. Past sessions have covered a wide array of activities and topics including communicating across cultures, perception, motivation, leadership, conflict resolution, self-management, team building, and creativity (to name a few) - any topic we cover in our classes is a good topic for this session. The teaching tools/approaches that have been shared in the past include, dancing, painting, meeting the professor in ways you hadn't considered, dialoguing, puzzle solving, brain teasing, utilizing new technologies, and mind mapping. This is a historical favorite at the MOBTS Annual Conference and you too can be a part of the campfire glow. These are the "I wish everyone could see how this short exercise impacts the learning/climate/engagement in my class" activities......short and impactful!! To be honest, over the years I have "stolen/borrowed" more of these than I can count, and these are the things that students often talk about and eventually other faculty ask me about them......to which I always freely admit that the idea came from my amazing group of MOBTS colleagues :) How can I get involved as a presenter with the experiential fire? Those interested in sharing an exercise at this session should send their completed materials to JP Palmer (juliepalmer56 at webster.edu or jp.juliepalmer at gmail.com) on or before Wednesday, January 19th by 5 pm-ish EST so that I have time to coordinate the full proposal. What types of things should be sent to the campfire organizers? We are going to follow the symposium guidelines https://mobts.org/mobts-guidelines/#1508301348527-a104166a-d1c0 but what you submit to me is described below; I will pull everyone's submissions together and submit the symposium document. So, two things should go to me (in one document) if you are interested in participating: (1) a title for the exercise and a brief overview/description of it in less than 200 words (which will be included in the submission) and (2) a more informative "how to" document that will be included in the conference proceedings BUT not in the conference submission). NOTE: In order to select exercises for this session, it will be helpful to send me both one and two.......however, due to this short deadline, you may be informal with the how-to document, but at the very least describe it in some detail so I can understand what the exercise/activity is. You can always refine it later. NOTE: Attached is a sample from 2020. If you want to see more examples of submissions from 2020 or prior or if you have any questions please email me at juliepalmer56 at webster.edu or jp.juliepalmer at gmail.com. In the longer descriptive "how to" document, please include the following: (1) MATERIALS (the materials required for the exercise), (2) AIMS (the aims of the exercise), (3) OVERVIEW (an overview of how the exercise is run with descriptive information and specific steps), (4) DEBRIEFING (an explanation/descriptive walkthrough of how the debriefing is run either throughout or at the end of the exercise), (5) OUTCOMES (what types of learning goals and outcomes are associated with the exercise), and (6) CONTACT INFORMATION (your contact information including email address and phone). If you have any questions, please feel free to email JP at the addresses above. I look forward to your exercises and to another amazing campfire - this time in the great state of California! All the best from your MOBTS Experiential Fire Camp Counselor! JP "J.P."
