Social Determinants of Student Mental Health: Searching for Solutions
social determinants of student mental health, social ecology, well-being
As management educators become more concerned with student mental health, we ought to look beyond individual stressors and stress management programs and instead examine possible social determinants. The world health organization (WHO) defines social determinants of mental health as the economic, social, and political conditions that shape our well-being. Multi-disciplinary research suggests that conditions such as income inequality, housing insecurity, food insecurity, household overcrowding, and long commute times weigh heavily on a person’s mental health. Faculty may easily overlook such factors if we assume these larger social issues fall outside of our purview. Yet, as educators, there are many steps we can take to address issues of inequity on our campuses. In this round table discussion, participants will brainstorm possible solutions and share what has worked at our institutions. Both faculty and administrators are invited to seek and provide insight so that we can work toward improving students’ mental health.
