Setting the Tone: A Best Practices Discussion for Stimulating Student Engagement on the First Day of Class

Abstract: Student engagement is frequently considered an important aspect of student learning, yet often a key challenge faced by course instructors. The first class period is a vital moment for setting the tone and stimulating student engagement. During the session, presenters will briefly address the importance of student engagement and share challenges for successfully creating an engaged class. Session attendees will learn practices that have stimulated student engagement on day one. Additionally, attendees will reflect on and be encouraged to share strategies they have found successful in improving student engagement in their courses.
