On Hidden Identities and Better Serving Our Students and Colleagues

Abstract: I have found myself in some situations recently where I have been bothered by the fact that some of my sources of social identity have been overlooked. I pass for White while being a Latina immigrant. This creates tension for me, I want to feel like I belong but at the same time I want my differences recognized. It has made me realize that many of my students and colleagues might find themselves in a similar situation, having key parts of their identities be invisible from their instructors or peers. During this roundtable we will discuss ideas of how to better serve our students and colleagues, and honor their identities.

Keywords: passing, social identity, diversity

Topic: DEI   |   Format: Roundtable Discussion
