Designing Service As Leadership Development: Preparing For Leadership As A Woman In Academia

Abstract: The purpose of this PDW is to introduce ideas for how women (and men) can develop their leadership abilities throughout their academic career while performing Academic Service. By reflecting on individual leadership development goals, an individual can develop a strategic approach to Service responsibilities. This can help optimize an individual’s leadership development opportunities. We will discuss how this strategic approach to Service responsibilities can help an individual avoid unwanted service while strategically seeking service that provides a way to both achieve personal goals and develop leadership skills.
