Abstract: Experiences of grief have become all-too-common in organizational life and institutions of higher education are not immune. From devastating school shootings to sudden health crises to protracted battles with chronic disease, the loss of life often leaves colleagues, co-workers, and students desperately searching for comfort in the midst of grief. However, a growing literature suggests the shortcomings of many traditional approaches to supporting others who are grieving. This proposed PDW takes inspiration from the sentiment expressed by Hans Christian Andersen: “Where words fail, music speaks.” Participants will partake in a guided analysis of the jazz ballad Loss, which provides unique insights into the delicate, dynamic role of those who seek to support (without stifling or overwhelming) the individuals around them who are grieving. The session will include breakouts and reflections on future research to better equip management educators to support colleagues, co-workers, and students who are grieving.
