Using Appreciative Inquiry to Establish Shared Classroom Ground Rules

Establishing a positive and respectful classroom culture, a Hospitable Learning Space (Trinh et al, 2021) is a critical part of the preparing the ground for learning. This exercise enables student participation in creating the ground rules for the class for the semester using a process that is based on Appreciative Inquiry. Because the ground rules are co-created, students are more likely see them as legitimate. Further, they can see a link between the ground rules and positive and meaningful experiences in their lives.
