SHOULD WE STOP ASSIGNING AND ASSESSING (VIRTUAL) TEAMWORK?: ACKNOWLEDGING THE CHALLENGES AND OVERCOMING THE (VIRTUAL) TEAMWORK PROBLEM
A normative aspect of management education is students’ participation in team-based projects. Although there exists widespread advocacy for, adoption of, and assessment of teamwork in management courses, the operationalization of “teamwork” is rife with conceptual and practical challenges (e.g., accurate assessment of each teammate’s contribution). This is especially the case with virtual teamwork, given uniquely stubborn obstacles for faculty and students. This session is designed to create a venue for management instructors to engage on this subject—share insights, discuss concerns in a safe environment, and provide key takeaways that improve the practice of virtual teamwork in the management classroom.
