It is an Accelerated, not an Abbreviated Course! Maintaining Substantial Equivalence in Course Development

The shift from 14 and 15-week semester courses to 7 and 8-week semesters, three-week J-Term (Winter Semester), and one-week Maymester curriculum is upending the principle of substantial equivalence in Course Level and program-level objectives. This symposium will discuss the substantial equivalence in course-level and program-level objectives, as well as how learners and teachers should not focus on abbreviation but on acceleration and how instructors communicate that to students. A hands-on exercise using a 15-week syllabus to create syllabi of the same course in accelerated formats for 7-week, 3-week, and 1-week courses.
