Don't Stop Servicin': Achieving Balance to Avoid Burnout

Many faculty members are overwhelmed by increasing service demands, which detract from their teaching and research productivity. This roundtable provocation will explore strategies for managing service workloads, setting boundaries, and negotiating buyouts or reductions in service with administration. Participants will discuss the necessity of service to the effective functioning of our institutions and the importance to U.S. News and World Report Rankings. The discussion will explore strategies for prioritizing service commitments and effective negotiation techniques to safeguard time for research and teaching. This session aims to help faculty maintain balance, prevent burnout, and recognize the value of ongoing service.
