Poof! There Goes Your Ego: Teaching Humility Through Card Magic

This hands-on classroom exercise uses simple card magic to help participants experience what it feels like to struggle, fail, and perform before they feel ready. After brief instruction, participants attempt and perform card tricks with limited practice, creating low-stakes but meaningful moments of vulnerability. These “micro-failures” spark honest reactions around confidence, frustration, and learning under pressure. A guided debrief connects the experience to leadership humility, psychological safety, and teamwork, helping participants reflect on what to do in situations where they do not have immediate mastery. The activity is easy to run, requires no special magical skills, and works well in undergraduate, graduate, and executive classrooms.
