When Saying Yes Costs More Than You Think: Evaluating Extra-Role Work in Academia
In academic environments that implicitly reward organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs), faculty and doctoral candidates often struggle to manage extra-role requests without undermining their well-being or career priorities. While prior research highlights the benefits of OCBs, growing evidence points to diminishing returns and unintended negative consequences when such behaviors become excessive or automatic. This Professional Development Workshop introduces the Impact Framework, a research-informed decision-making tool that helps participants evaluate the personal, relational, and organizational consequences of extra-role work. Through guided reflection, peer discussion, and applied exercises, participants develop intentional strategies for engaging in extra-role work sustainably and meaningfully.
