Performance or Development? What Large Classes and AI Reveal About the Limits of Assessing Values

This roundtable provocation invites educators to examine an uncomfortable question: when students can produce well-articulated ethical reasoning on demand (whether through preparation, performance, or AI assistance), how do we know if we are developing ethical judgment or merely assessing its performance? Large classes intensify this tension, constraining our ability to verify authentic moral development through individualized engagement. Rather than offering solutions, this session provides a structured space for educators to surface, name, and examine this dilemma collectively. Participants will leave with shared language for a common teaching challenge and clearer design questions to guide pedagogical choices in their own contexts.
