Silent Signals: Experiential Exercises for Non-Verbal Communication
Non-verbal communication is a vital yet often overlooked aspect of effective communication across academic, professional, and intercultural contexts. Recent research highlights the influence of non-verbal cues on engagement, clarity, emotional connection, and cross-cultural understanding. This activity uses two experiential exercises, Silent Communication and Neutral Listening, to help students experience the challenges of communicating without words or without listener feedback. Participants deepen awareness of non-verbal behavior, emotional intelligence, and intercultural communication skills. Structured debriefing connects experiences to communication and relational concepts, offering a replicable classroom exercise suitable for diverse disciplines, learning environments, and student populations.
