Setting Students Up for Success: The Application of Onboarding and Socialization Theory to the Classroom Setting

Just as new hires must be onboarded and socialized into the workplace, so, too, can students benefit from structured experiences that thoughtfully introduce them to the classroom. Drawing from academic literature and organizational best practices spanning five decades, this session presents a process that walks professors through the design of a meaningful course beginning that can potentially achieve outcomes such as increased student satisfaction, commitment to the course, and performance. Professors will consider socialization content areas they want students to master, craft onboarding activities that will achieve this mastery, and shape how students will experience the socialization process.
