You Got to Earn It: A Purpose-Driven Icebreaker on Grading, Effort, and Accountability
This experiential exercise reimagines the first-day icebreaker as a purpose-driven dialogue on grading, effort, and accountability. Students collaboratively explore what it means to “earn” a grade, fostering reflection on fairness, motivation, and responsibility. Grounded in inclusive pedagogy, self-determination theory, and Arthur C. Brooks’ concept of “earned success,” the activity aligns classroom expectations with intrinsic motivation and professional growth. Through small-group discussion and shared reflection, students co-create a sense of accountability and belonging, while instructors gain insight into their students' mindsets. The result is a simple, adaptable, and values-based exercise that builds engagement, trust, and purpose from day one.
