How are Students Using AI (and why do they do that?)

This session will explore how students are using generative AI and how faculty can address AI usage in our classrooms. We will have attendees participate in two short generative AI exercises that mimic how students actually use AI. We will also share data collected for the purpose of identifying AI usage patterns and how advertising information from social media marketing impacts their adoption of AI usage. This session will be heavily interactive and discussion based. The activity will be suitable for both undergraduate and graduate student instructors. Overall the activities will help participants better understand why students have difficulty in perceiving AI ethics and how faculty can develop and employ best teaching strategies that will facilitate more ethical usage of AI by our students.
