Making Complexity Teachable: An Interactive Workshop Based on a Decade of Management Education Research

This workshop addresses the challenge of teaching for complexity in business education by drawing on a scoping review of management education literature (2015–2024). The review identified eight pedagogical approaches: case method, simulations and games, reflective practices, integrated designs, problem-based learning, physical activities, mapping and modelling, and humanities/arts-based methods. The workshop highlights each approach’s strengths and limitations for understanding complexity and fostering students’ complex thinking. Participants engage in an interactive mapping exercise and plenary discussion to examine these approaches and develop practical design principles. The workshop equips educators with actionable ideas to better prepare students for complex organizational contexts.
