Increasing Students’ Culturally Empathy: Activities and Lessons Learned

Keywords: Inclusivity, Cultural empathy, Self-reflection

Abstract: Making courses, whether online or in-person, more inclusive allows students the ability to maintain their cultural competence and learn more about each other. Research shows that interacting with or learning about individuals from diverse backgrounds can increase our empathy towards them. This engenders more understanding and tolerance, making a more culturally empathetic student body. Helping students become more inclusive will prepare them better for work beyond the classroom. This workshop outlines assignments and reflections used in a management course and provides student feedback on the impact this had. There will be time for discussion and idea sharing for attendees.
