Photography’s Power and Potential for Teaching and Learning
Keywords: photography, visual arts, storytelling
Abstract: Photography can do something that text on its own often cannot – draw the learner in and evoke curiosity about deeper meaning. When connected to storytelling, photographs can release an emotional response, which educators can harness to help students remember content. During this session, participants will engage in a gallery-viewing activity of selected photographs I’ve taken when creating an open-source photography-based book. This book aims to help students understand theories in a visual manner and the activity is a practice in slow-looking techniques. I aim to prompt lively discussion and generate ideas for how to use photography to support students’ learning.
