Advancing active learning in management education: professional development for faculty through their own high engagement

Keywords: active learning technologies, pedagogic innovation, faculty professional development

Abstract: Much university education still involves essentially instructional pedagogies, supported by long-standing technology tools with which faculty are familiar. Shifting to active learning pedagogy, and to correspondingly modern technology tools, often seems like a step too far for over-worked faculty, especially post-pandemic. This experiential exercise provides extracts from an intensive professional development workshop for faculty, which exemplifies hands-on experience of active learning. This is a key component in supporting them through their pedagogic and skills transition to deploy more active learning. It draws on an emerging genre of educational software, described here as an "Active Learning and Teaching Platform".
