Effectively Measuring Participation
Keywords: Student Participation, Participation Evaluation, Graded Participation
Abstract: This roundtable discussion will focus on how we can measure student participation in fair, less subjective, and reliable ways. Five different ways of measuring participation will be explained throughout the session. This includes measuring attendance and how much a student speaks in class, utilizing detailed rubrics to determine points for participation, adding technology and polling software to collect student participation, asking students and peers to assess their participation, and assigning prior to class assignments to ensure students come to class prepared. This session will engage participants by using one of the participation measures (Mentimeter) to allow for answers to be shared and discussed.
