Lights, Camera, Hire Me!: A Collaborative Approach With Instructor and Peer Feedback To Elevate Video Résumés

Abstract: The proliferation of smartphones and video editing tools has made video content creation, particularly in the form of "Video Résumés," more accessible for employment screening. These concise self-introduction videos, easily produced and shared by job applicants, highlight the importance of effective delivery and technology proficiency. In this study, using a descriptive research design, I describe how I assisted 17 management students in creating their first video résumés, with a specific focus on their nonverbal communication and technology use. An "in-class clinic" allowed for self- and peer-assessment, supported by my quantitative and qualitative feedback. Subsequent revisions were informed by anonymized peer and instructor feedback, resulting in visible improvements. Participants' reflective questionnaires indicated self-enhancement, underscoring the clinic's significance. This research informs business communication instructors on integrating this authentic résumé model, particularly relevant in the AI era, within a concise and impactful framework.
