Keywords: Higher education, sustainability, Japanese education system, Zemi, holistic approach

Session Type: SoTL

Abstract

Achieving sustainability has emerged as an essential agenda in higher education. The educational purpose and curricular content should be linked to the engagement in the social and ecological environment of local and global societies. This study points to the sustainability issue in higher education and introduces a Japanese case that facilitates connection with society through the Zemi (seminar) system and fosters citizenship of students, which contributes to achieving sustainability in higher education.
