Paper Tank Tracks for Learning Humanistic Management

Keywords: humanistic management, principles of management, constructive alignment, experiential learning, instructional innovation

Session Type: ExEx

Abstract

Teaching humanistic management can be challenging because it differs significantly from traditional management models prioritizing profitability. Balancing the idealistic principles of humanistic management with the practical realities of the business world can be difficult, and students may feel frustrated as they try to reconcile these two aspects. They may also be skeptical as they challenge existing paradigms. To address this, constructive alignment reminds us to specify students' learning objectives and how they will achieve them. Kolb’s experiential learning theory also presents a way of structuring a session using a learning cycle. A gamified group exercise called “The Paper Tank Track” was conceptualized to fully engage students in learning about humanistic management. This innovative classroom intervention goes beyond the traditional case method and business simulation. It is a structured experiential learning activity that will allow students to have fun while critically exploring the values of humanistic management.
