A Simple Sheet of Paper

In this exercise, students receive a blank piece of paper and are asked to make a nametag for themselves. The only two requirements are that 1) the nametag has to be able to stand on its own and 2) the nametag should be legible from the front of the room. A discussion of different strategies to create the nametag follows. The takeaway from this activity is that there are multiple correct solutions to a problem. We discuss the differences between short-term and long-term goals. The nametags are collected at the end of each session and redistributed at the beginning of each session and function as a sign-in sheet. By actively participating in the activity, students are more likely to understand and retain the lesson. This activity is best suited for strategic management courses. Additional pieces of this activity can be conducted throughout the semester.
