A Classroom Activity To Encourage Responsible Generative Ai Use In Educational Settings

In this session, I will present an activity that has been successfully utilized in both undergraduate and masters-level courses that engages students in thinking critically about responsible generative AI use in their education. Students work in small groups with a scenario depicting a common AI use and discuss whether it reflects “responsible” use, how it helps or hinders learning, whether it would be acceptable in the workplace, and three ways to utilize AI responsibly within this course. Following small-group discussion, the instructor leads a full-class debrief in which students consider what knowledge, skills, and abilities are important for them to develop throughout their education to be career-ready and able to provide value to organizations upon graduation. Finally, utilizing the guidelines for responsible AI use that students discussed in their groups, the professor leads students through the co-creation of a policy on AI use for the course.
