Is That You Chatgpt? A Roundtable Provocation On Gen Ai In Assessments – Issues, Experiences and A Way Forward.

The purpose of this roundtable provocation is to create an open and honest dialogue to explore the issue of Gen AI use in assessments, such as student’s use of ChatGPT to write their assessments. This is a chance for us as academics who are the creators and markers of student assessment to share our experiences and expertise on the growing use of Gen AI in student assessments: the techniques used to detect Gen AI particularly unauthorised use by us as educators, as well as suggestions from the growing academic literature and online conversations; why automated Gen AI detection is no longer effective and is being reconsidered or abandoned by many universities; and is there a way Gen AI can be fooled into revealing itself. These discussions will culminate into a conversation to understand the best way(s) forward for the future of assessments at a university level.
