Designing, Managing, and Grading Student Teamwork: An Evidence-Based Framework For Developing Student Teamwork Competencies

Abstract: Despite widespread recognition of teamwork's importance in professional contexts, typical approaches to teaching and assessing teamwork in higher education often fail to develop student competencies. This Professional Development Workshop presents a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for team assessments that addresses common pedagogical failures. We integrate educational best practices with the team development literature to create a structured approach emphasizing both task and outcome interdependence. Participants will learn to implement key components, including strategic team formation, multi-phase project design, peer evaluations, and dedicated in-class team coaching time. We will share practical tools, templates, and other resources to support this integrated approach.
