Designing, Managing, and Grading Student Teamwork: An Evidence-Based Framework For Developing Student Teamwork Competencies

Despite widespread recognition of teamwork's importance in professional contexts, typical approaches to teaching and assessing teamwork in higher education often fail to develop student competencies. This Professional Development Workshop presents a comprehensive, evidence-based framework for team assessments that addresses common pedagogical failures. We integrate educational best practices with the team development literature to create a structured approach emphasizing both task and outcome interdependence. Participants will learn to implement key components, including strategic team formation, multi-phase project design, peer evaluations, and dedicated in-class team coaching time. We will share practical tools, templates, and other resources to support this integrated approach.
