A Short and Effective Service-Learning Project To Encourage Student Engagement and Agency In The Areas of Universal Design For Learning and Neurodivergence
In this session, we describe a service-learning project which was created to be used in a large (i.e., 400 students) core curriculum course. The project aims were to have students serve as consultants in the research and design of inclusive campus spaces for those who are neurodiverse. The idea behind this was to create an experiential exercise through which students would learn, engage, and experience a sense of agency as creators of positive change within their campus community. We were interested in exploring whether this approach enhanced student knowledge of neurodiversity and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and if it empowered students to see themselves as agents of positive change in their community. We believe our project design can be used in both large and small classes, and is ideal for undergraduate management students. Attendees will receive all templates and materials to use and adapt at their home institutions.
