A Typology of Escape Room Puzzles

Escape rooms are becoming a popular way of presenting learning experiences (Chapman, et al, 2019; Veldkamp et al, 2020) that can enhance learner motivation through interactive problem solving (Beattie, 2025). Through the exploration of an online escape room, participants in this session will explore the different types of puzzle that can be used to structure learning activity and engage learners. This session explores the design of educational escape rooms with a focus on the types of puzzles that might be incorporated, drawing on experience of implementation in management education and other disciplines.
