Applying Schwartz’s Theory of Values for a Values Exercise

Keywords: values, diversity

Abstract: In this paper I describe a values exercise based on Schwartz’s (1992) theory of values. According to Schwartz (1992) there exists a universal structure of values, but different individuals and groups can have different value priorities. In short, different things are important to different people. In this exercise, I have students complete Schwartz’s (1992) values survey and give them their scores. In class, students first read their scores and discuss them in small groups. Afterwards, we have a broader discussion at the class level of values and their implications for the workplace.
