Assessing student learning outcomes: Let’s create some rubrics

Abstract: The huge literature examining student learning assessment indicates there is no best or preferred way to mark students’ work and assign a grade. One popular and practical assessment tool is a marking rubric, used to link desired learning objectives to students’ actual work. While rubrics can be effective, efficient, and transparent marking tools, controversies persist about them, including issues of validity and reliability. In this PDW, participants will engage with major literature findings about positives and negatives of rubric use, and have an opportunity to examine and experiment with a variety of examples for potential use in their own courses.
